Wire Rope Grips

Refer to Table 1 in following these instructions. Turn back specified amount of rope from thimble or loop. Apply first clip one base width from dead end of rope. Apply U-Bolt over dead end of wire rope - live end rests in saddle (Never saddle a dead horse !) - exception G429. Tighten nuts evenly, alternate from one nut to the other until reaching the recommended torque.

When two clips are required, apply the second clip as near the loop or thimble as possible. Tighten nuts evenly, alternating until reaching the recommended torque. When more than two clips are required, apply the second clip as as near the loop or thimble as possible, turn nuts on the second clip firmly, but do not tighten. Proceed to Step 3.

When tree or more clips are required, space additional clips equally between first two - take up slack - tighten nuts on each U-Bolt evenly, alternating from one nut to the other until reaching recommended torque.

The preferred method of splicing two wire ropes together is to use interlocking turnback eyes with thimbles, using the recommended number of clips on each eye (See figure 1)

Rigging Equipment : Shackle

A shackle is a U-shaped piece of metal secured with a pin or bolt across the opening, or a hinged metal loop secured with a quick-release locking pin mechanism. They are used as a connecting link in all manner of rigging systems, from boats and ships, to industrial crane rigging. As an automotive term, it refers to a link connecting the leaf spring to the frame.

SHACKLE - TYPE

Screw Pin Shackles can be used in any application where a round pin shackle is used. In addition, screw pin shackles can be used for applications involving side-loading circumstances. Reduced working load limits are required for side-loading applications. While in service, do not allow the screw pin to be rotated by a live line, such as a choker application.

Round Pin Shackles can be used in tie down, towing, suspension or lifting applications where the load is strictly applied in-line.

Bolt-Type Shackles can be used in any applications where round pin or screw pin shackles are used. In addition, they are recommended for permanent or long term installations and where the load may slide on the shackle pin causing the pin to rotate.

Rigging Equipment : Slings

A sling is one of various designs of webbing (usually Nylon) or steel (chain or cable) straps either with eyes on each end or an endless loop, used in rigging for lifting heavy loads. A choker sling is intended for use with one end run thru the other end in a way that allows it to tighten on the load to positively secure it during a lift.

Synthetic web slings
Advantages

- Extremely flexible
- Mold to shape of load
- Will not damage the load
- Relatively light weight

Disadvantages
- Subject to heat damage
- Stretch uder load
- Subject to cut or tear
- Subject to damage dau to sharp angles
- Require tag on sling


Wire Rope Slings
Advantages
- Easy to find
- Good strength to size ratio
- Light weight
- Easy to inspect
- Easy to find capacity
- No tag required

Disadvantages
- Stiff around small objects
- Hard to bend around sharp corner
- May not grip slick items such as pipe


Chain Slings
Advantages
- Durable n almost conditions
- Will mold to shape of most load
- Easily Adjusted

Disadvantages
- Difficult to inspect
- Heavy and bulky
- Will damage some loads
- Require tag on sling
